Are you excited? You most certainly should be! Buckle up because we’re about to explore this extraordinary marque’s rich history and breathtaking designs!

History of Spyker

Spyker, a Dutch sports car marque, has a rich history that dates back to its origins as a manufacturer of carriages in the late 19th century. From there, the company transitioned into automobile and aircraft production, even making appearances on stamps and in film.

License Production and Auto Rental

Spyker Cars is not just about making cool cars. It also gives out licences and offers rental services. From our start in 1880, we have grown a lot. Our goal was always to make more Spyker models.

We didn’t stop there; we changed them too. This lets us meet many different needs in the car world. Being a Dutch company, our roots are deep. We made carriages and planes along with cars.

Car Models

You might not know that Spyker Cars made a massive splash in the car industry. This brand has a long history of making high-end sports cars.

  1. One of their first-ever models was the C8 Spyder. This model got a lot of attention.
  2. The 5 H.P. model was another big hit from the past, showing Spyker’s skills.
  3. Spyker Cars didn’t stop there! They kept setting new trends with their exclusive car models.
  4. They’ve held on to their roots using the same name, motto, and logo.
  5. Victor Muller and Maarten de Bruijn brought Spyker into the modern era in 1999.
  6. They were not just automobile makers; they also made carriages and aircraft.

Aircraft

Spyker made a big move in 1914. They joined forces with Dutch Aircraft Factory N.V. This wasn’t just about cars anymore—it was also about planes! Planes and their jet engines took the spotlight in Spyker’s car design.

Their C8 Aileron sports car is a good show of this. It got its look from jet-engined aircraft propulsion; how cool is that? But it doesn’t stop there; for heritage and their love for aviation, they made their B6 Venator Concept car shine bright as an aeroplane inside! So you see, being both a plane and car maker gives Spyker its unique touch on sports cars.

Spyker on Stamps and in Film

Spyker cars have made their way onto stamps and the big screen. On 10 May 2004, Dutch postage stamps proudly displayed Spyker brand cars. That’s not all, though! In the 1953 film Genevieve, Kenneth More drove a Spyker car.

The movie showed people what driving this fantastic Dutch machine feels like. Both films and stamps give us glimpses of this marvellous automobile in action!

Ownership and Sales of Saab Automobile

Spyker made headlines in the automotive industry when it acquired Saab Automobile, but what happened next? Let’s find out.

Proposed Sales and Eventual Sale of Saab

I will share the journey of how Saab got sold to Spyker Cars.

  1. Saab Automobile had a rough patch in business.
  2. The Dutch car maker Spyker stepped in with a rescue plan.
  3. In 2010, Spyker bought Saab from General Motors (G.M.).
  4. Spyker paid G.M. $74 million in cash and gave out $326 million in preferred shares.
  5. It was a big financial deal which attracted many eyes.
  6. Spyker made sure that Saab had enough money for its growth plans.
  7. Even though more cash was needed, they secured the funds for Saab’s development.
  8. After being owned by G.M. for ten years, Saab found a new owner before it went bankrupt in 2009.
  9. The Dutch company Spyker Cars became the proud new owners of Saab.
  10. However, things did not go as planned, and the sale ended the Saab cars business.
  11. The transaction is essential to car history and still draws interest from car lovers worldwide today.

Acquisition and Bankruptcy of Saab Automobile

Spyker Cars N.V. became the new owner of Saab Automobile in 2010. It proved a tough road as Saab faced constant money issues. They had to stop making cars in just over a year because of their financial problems.

In 2011, Saab hit rock bottom when it had no choice but to file for bankruptcy. This was less than two years after General Motors sold it off. The old owner, Spyker NV, did not take this lightly.

They took action against General Motors and asked for $3 billion in court! They claimed that General Motors made Saab go broke on purpose.

Joint Ventures with Youngman

Spyker made a smart move. They teamed up with the Zhejiang Youngman Passenger Car Group from China. Both firms created joint ventures to make cars based on Saab Automobile designs. Spyker and Youngman were equal owners of these new companies.

The plan was to develop three new models together. They also set up another company, Spyker Phoenix. This firm had big plans for a fresh line of high-end cars based on Saab designs.

Talks between Spyker and Youngman ended well.

Spyker Cars has always had a passion for motorsport. They have been involved in Formula One racing with the Spyker F1 Team, making them the second-ever constructor from the Netherlands to compete in this prestigious sport.

In addition to Formula One, they established Spyker Squadron in 2000, which has participated in the famous endurance race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, multiple times. Racing is vital to the brand as it showcases its cars’ endurance and high-performance capabilities.

Unfortunately, after competing in the 2007 season, the Spyker F1 Team was later replaced by Force India.

Voluntary Financial Restructuring

On December 2, 2014, Spyker Cars voluntarily decided to restructure its finances. This meant that the company needed to devise a plan to address its debts and financial obligations.

The Dutch courts granted Spyker a temporary moratorium on payment during this restructuring process. This allowed the company some time to develop a new strategy and negotiate with its creditors.

In May 2015, Spyker announced that it had completed the financial restructuring and was now debt-free. This was good news for the company’s financial stability as it could focus on moving forward without overwhelming debt.
