Amazing Cars and Drives Car Buyers Guide: Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS53 4MATIC+ Review

Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS53 4MATIC+ is the latest in our series of expert car reviews. Here at Amazing Cars and Drives, we have been big fans of the Mercedes C-Class, and when we heard about AMG’s plans to release a four-door coupe, we just couldn’t wait to test drive it. As expected, the new C-Class has been well worth the wait, with Mercedes pledging to achieve the loftiest of ambitions: merging the very best elements of a saloon and a coupe. We are happy to say that AMG have done just that, with a beautiful, luxurious coupe that truly ticks all the boxes.

Examining the interior of the CLS53 4MATIC+ makes the car a worthy investment in itself, with a cabin more typical of a high-end saloon (think Mercedes E or S-Class). Meanwhile, the exterior of the car is beautifully aerodynamic, and certainly more typical of a Mercedes Couple. Here we have a true hybrid which has achieved its objectives with comfort and performance in mind.

Such a hybrid represents a new entry to the market, and Mercedes can present themselves as leaders in this field since the first launch of the CLS over 16 years ago. Whilst sticking to the same formula as previous iterations of the CLS, Mercedes have clearly adapted the new model to seriously compete with leading competitors such as the Volkswagen Arteon and the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. And it certainly does compete.

On the exterior, the car’s body shape is nearly free from lines and creases in the metal. However, we see that iconic diamond grille to the face of the car – features that are typically integrated within the manufacturer’s line of coupe cars. Not only do we have that coupe-style diamond grille – we also have high-performance two-section LED tail lights and an enlarged Mercedes logo on the back of the vehicle.

We tested the CLS 53, an immensely power vehicle ran by a 3.0 litre, 435 horsepower engine. Notable, this is supported by an electric hybrid system, in a pattern which is appearing to become more common amongst the leading manufacturers. The result of this is a more than competent high-speed cruiser that allows for lengthy journeys in total comfort.

Those journeys are made all-the-more convenient by the integration of MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) technology, which is jam-packed with its own huge range of safety and assisted driving features. Check out our video review yourself!
